VICA
Right now I am in a collective called the Crystal Light Collective (@crystallightcollective) which is made up of female/femme music and spoken word artists Shaemara, Soft Honey, Tiger Wing, Janette King and I.
I have always sung since I was a kid but I always did covers because I was afraid of writing my own material. I finally got sick of doing covers and forced myself to write songs. I have now written about 20 songs since I started, some released, some unreleased but writing songs is very cathartic for me, and performing them is even better. Throughout my music career I've been blessed to be surrounded by other great artists such as the other members of the collective and they all inspire me to do more and to keep going.
I would categorize my music under neosoul/R&B. Sensual yet dark. Strong yet vulnerable. Rich and sultry vocals that convey love, lust and pain. My music is almost exclusively about heart break or sexuality. Apparently those are the 2 things I feel most strongly about.
I am all about Ari Lennox right now. I love her vibe, her grooves are cool and sensual and her voice is just effortless. Also love Mick Jenkins and Anderson Paak for sure. I've always been a fan of Anderson Paak and I'm loving his new album Ventura. That shit is on repeat right now.
I'm a visual artist. I make digital art, I paint, I make accessories. I also try to stay active. I do kickboxing and I like to dance. A LOT. I just want to be FKA Twigs. Singer/songwriter, dancer, martial artist.
I am not the best with discipline but I try to always think of the end result like where do I want to be and that usually pushes me to do the things I need to do. I also look to my collective and they always inspire me to keep going, keep pushing and keep trying new things.
Dang, that's a good one. I'd say, "VICA, DO NOT CARE ABOUT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE MIGHT THINK OF YOU. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO BE WHOEVER OR WHATEVER YOU WANT." Such a cliche but you don't get it until you get it. When I got over the fear of people judging me or thinking I'm weird, it opened up so much possibilities and everything got exciting because I can literally wear whatever I want, sing however I want, write whatever I want and as long as its authentic, everything will be good. Some people may not like it, but in the over 7 billion people around the world, at least 1 person will like it and will be able to relate, and that's cool.
